Gardening Musings on Japanese gardens, with a link to a wonderful virtual tour, some recommended readings and the story of the garden I'm in the throes of planning.

Stay tuned for plans of the garden, once I get time to actually design the thing.

Pets They say no one wants to see pictures of people's pets. Tough.

Relax. Right now there's just one picture: it's of Jeoffry, Maine Coon Kitten from Hell. There'll eventually be several more pictures, including Emily the Quadruped (a noble German Shepherd), Sophie the Slut Princess (fawn domestic long hair cat) and Mudge the Ugly (fawn domestic short hair cat). I'll upload the pictures just as soon as I clean out my basement and find them.

Usenet An atypically succinct paean of praise to alt.folklore.urban, the best newsgroup there is, from its resident Ice Weasel.

Incidentally, it's not a good idea to wade into afu without reading the FAQ first. So I've put a link to the FAQ and the afu archive on there too.

Poetry No, not an earnest discussion of all the poets I love. Just three poems that mean something to me. The plan is to put new poems up from time to time, but I'm busy, dammit.
Shopping Good ways to get bargains, names of some reliable stores and a couple of companies to avoid in the ever- expanding world of on-line shopping.

If you're paying full price for anything, you don't know your way around the World Wide Web yet.

Literature This isn't a link yet. It will be.

To be adequately accurate, this link should probably be called "James Joyce", since I'm currently involved in both Ulysses and Finnegans Wake reading groups. Life as a full time middle aged graduate student doing an internship and ostensibly writing a dissertation simply doesn't allow time for much non-academic reading, and I seem to have chosen Joyce as my favourite diversion.

Food Love the stuff and feel as if I'm heading towards replacing the dead Fat Lady. Trouble is, I'm too busy eating and cooking to build this bit of my web page right now.

The plan is to have a rotating gallery of recipes on this section of my web page. Currently I'm deep into Indian and Thai cooking, with a healthy dollop of Italian carbs to keep me going.

Psychology Not sure what will go here. Hard to sum up something that is life's work and endless fascination all rolled into one.

There will certainly be something about psychoanalytic thinking, specifically the work of D.W.Winnicott. (He's the practitioner I'm supposed to be writing my dissertation on.) And maybe some stuff on Melanie Klein, whose work fascinates me more and more. And a tribute to Harold Searles, American psychoanalytic thinker and practitioner.

Miscellanea Whatever I couldn't fit in any place else will go here. Maybe this is where I put the dancing hamsters page, with Freud's face pasted onto each hamster. Or a dart board with B.F.Skinner's face on it. Or maybe it's where I'll indulge in some nattering about Mozart's Don Giovanni, since I seem to be obsessed with it.

Stay tuned.

Hunger Site Do click on this link! It takes you to a page that will donate between one and four cups of rice each time you visit (you're limited to one visit per day). It's a clever idea: sponsors place ads on the page, and instead of the usual cash per click, they contribute to the UN's World Food Programme for each visitor.

Since it was launched in June 1999, close to 56 million donations of food have been made via the Hunger Site.  In March this year alone, nearly 1,300 metric tons of food were donated via this site.
